CVCU demonstrates the importance of literacy and reading with two donations

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” --- Dr. Seuss

With this philosophy in mind, Columbia Valley Credit Union recently made two donations that promote literacy and reading in our community – to the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy and the BC and Yukon Book Prizes.

For many years, CVCU has supported the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) in Golden, and most recently gave $1,000 to its 14th Annual Books for Kids campaign. This investment will support CBAL’s family literacy programs in Golden, such as Come Cook with Me, Tinker Tots, Munchies and Math, and Books for Babies. These programs help create learning opportunities for families and encourage early literacy development.

“Literacy opens doors to endless possibilities,” says Kim Weatherall, CBAL’s Community Literacy Outreach Coordinator in Golden. “Literacy empowers individuals to actively participate in their communities, access education and job opportunities, and continuously grow throughout their lives. At CBAL, we believe literacy has the power to change lives, and we are passionate about bringing that change to our community."

CBAL offers a diverse range of programs that promote literacy across all ages. Whether it’s supporting family literacy through interactive programs or helping adults improve their skills through workshops, CBAL makes learning accessible for everyone.

The second donation was actually two gifts - $500 for the Lady Grey Elementary School and $500 for the Nicholson Elementary School to select books from the finalist list of the BC and Yukon Book Prizes for their school libraries. Last year, Alexander Park Elementary School and Golden Secondary School received these donations.

The BC and Yukon Book Prizes celebrate the achievements of BC and Yukon writers, illustrators and publishers. With CVCU’s donation, the school libraries will have some of the latest and most notable books by BC and Yukon authors in their collections. Curious about the finalists?
